Kermit: Yeah…
Johnny: That oughta get a hand!
(resounding applause)
Kermit: Thanks guys!
Johnny: He has addressed the students at Oxford University as the first amphibian
to be afforded such an honor and even received an honorary degree from Long
Island University in 1996 making him "Dr. Kermit the Frog".
Kermit: Yes, and I’ll be hanging up my shingle right over the Banana
Republic!
Johnny: This is kind of silly, but…
Kermit: Yeah it is, isn’t it?
Johnny: (Laughs)
Kermit: You think it’s silly for…
Johnny: (says something I didn’t catch)
Kermit: You think it’s silly for you!
Johnny: In addition to Kermit’s celebrity appearances, he is an active
humanitarian, or "amphibitarian" dedicated to several non-profit
charity groups.
Kermit: That’s true.
Johnny: They include Steven Spielberg’s Starbright Foundation…
Kermit: Uh huh. That’s true.
Johnny: I know that’s very popular with you.
Kermit: Absolutely
Johnny: The Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Kermit: Yes!
Johnny: UNICEF, Save the Children…
Kermit: Right…
Johnny: Make a Difference and The National Wildlife Federation…
Kermit: Yeah…
Johnny: …among others…
Kermit: Yeah, not to mention The Roar Foundation
Johnny: What?
Kermit: The Roar Foundation, that’s my friend Tippi.
Johnny: Whoa, yes, yes…
Kermit: Yes.
Johnny: Tippi Hedren …
Kermit: We’ll-we’ll-we’ll talk about that later…
Johnny: I’m going to introduce…I’ll do that now, I’ll
go ahead…
Kermit: Ok…
Johnny: This young lady is here and has done so much on the screen but to
preserve and make life better for animals that have been brought to her from
all over the world…
Kermit: That’s right…
Johnny: …would you acknowledge Tippi Hedren. Where is Tippi? Tippi,
step out and let ‘em see you.
(applause)
Kermit: Oh there she is! Yeah…
Johnny: Ah you know Kermit?
Kermit: Hmm?
Johnny: Tippi Hedren.. went to Viet Nam with me 2ce for the USO…
Kermit: Really?
Johnny: …and I am on my way now, next week for the Thanksgiving holiday
to go over for the USO to Afghanistan…
Kermit: Wow!
Johnny: and I’ll… would you like to go?
Kermit: Well uh, is Tippi going too?
Johnny: Not this year…
Kermit: Not this time?
Johnny: mm mm.
Kermit: Well, you know I‘d love to except that I have a feeling that
if I go miss Piggy’s gonna wanna go, and the, and the plane won’t
be big enough for all her outfits… I don’t know how they feel
about pigs over there. Some of the… those countries don’t care
for pigs… So maybe I should decline this time, but maybe another time.
Johnny: Are you telling me, I didn’t quite hear , that you want Miss
Piggy to go with me?
Kermit: No, well maybe Miss Piggy could go with you…
Johnny: Yeah I would like that!
Kermit: You would?
Johnny: Yeah!
Kermit: OK! Wow… I’ll uh…
Johnny: Let’s talk about this…
Kermit: No accounting for taste, Johnny…
Johnny: I like this you man! This guy’s ok--you can make a deal with
him in a hurry! Now with only his talent, his banjo and a song in his heart,
a young green Kermit headed on to make his way into the big world of show
business.
Kermit: Show business…
Johnny: His first stop was Washington DC, ‘member that?
Kermit: I do! That was a while ago.
Johnny: Remember who was President?
Kermit: Uhhh, oh boy! I forget…
Johnny: (laughs) Ok, it’s alright… He starred on a local television…
Kermit: Lincoln, I think! I think it was Lincoln.
Johnny: oh…
Kermit: It was a long time ago…
Johnny: You could have said "Grant"…
Kermit: I could’ve…
Johnny: You…
Kermit: Oh course I could’ve! It was Grant!
Johnny: …Sam and Friends is the show he was on, a program for which
he helped earn the first of many Emmy awards. In 1956, Kermit made his network
television debut on the Tonight Show with Steve Allen…
Kermit: That’s right…
